rung down the curtain

it wasn't so much the auction-site cosmic 35 that i coveted, but rather the three rolls of expired-38-years-ago film that were included, possibly as an afterthought, in the sale.

the first one, trusted lovingly to the ricoh - the best possible opportunities and all that - and dubiously processed, made me dance, foolish and jubilant, around the scanner.
as gayla said not long ago: film is magic.

but, just for curiosity's sake, where were you in 1968?
or, rather, were you at all?

  1. If I make it to Europe before you leap to Mapleland, I *may* stop by Amsterdam again. Looking forward to reshoot some of the channel scenes...

  2. Are THESE the photos?? In 1968, I was 13...and it's a sure sign that I constantly forget how old I am by the fact that when I read "38 year old film" I instantly thought you were referring to the 1940's...ha!

  3. In 1968 I was... well, just born. Not even, if your film predates March. Glad to see that old film still makes good photos, I feel affinity with it.

  4. Great shots, these.
In 1968 is was five. I'm afraid that the only thing I can say about 1968 is that it was the year that my father died in a road accident. I'm sure you'll understand that this is the strongest memory I have of that year. Even though I was only 5 I have a few strong memories of that year, all related to that one event.
Love the way you cherish the 'antique' technology, Lynn.

  7. Wow, nice black and white. I love the railing detail. And in 1968 I was playing with something on the living room floor. Or maybe still in bed, at this time of day...

  8. The black/and/white makes you think that these were made in 1968.
I that year I was going from my second job to my third, and to my fourth. Never could stand it for more than 6 months. I found something nice to do later though...

  9. the shot of the canal and the shot of the bikes are my favorites. lovely! timeless!
i'm afraid i was not around in 1968. i was born in '73, three years before my bicycle was made:)

  10. I wasn't yet either, not for another 9 years.
At first I thought that 3 rolls of shot-but-not-yet-developed film was with the camera, but I see that you used it now. they look like they could be from 1968, if you don't look too closely at the cars.

  12. I was just a "thought" in 1968.
I love how every item in each shot has a twin.

  13. Very cool stuff. I especially like the bicycles. In 1968 I was sixteen and trying to figure out how to get out my little town and caught up in the grand events of the decade.

  14. Oh goodness.
These are fabulous. I too, at first thought you had developed an old film. How wonderful.
Yummy black and white prints Lynn!

  15. I love all of these, but the bottom one is especially great, as it reminds me of my mother's kitchen curtains when I was a boy. And in those days everything was in black and white. Lovely.

  16. I thought i was happy with where we lived. I really did; spacious apartment by nyc standards (honestly, ask our friends in leiden, you may have their email addy from previous dialogs) but now that I see these new shots using old film, I feel obliged to change habitats so that we can slough off the old ansel adams b&w's so that we can bring in the new - - and these would be high on the list!
all seriousness now, these are splendid.
at this point, having watched your site for over a year now, I'm curious about the artistic confidence. when you post a set like this, are you brimming with 'i know they're going to like this' or is it "I hope they;re going to..." or even "if they do they do if they don't they don't"?

  17. Hello,
    Kasia

  18. In 1968 my parents were in university and just starting to date and picking up all sorts of vaguely hippy ideals that they'd subject us to through childhood. Great pictures, they really turned out lovely.

  19. I love the symmetry of these black and white photos.
    In 1968, I was a wee one, almost a year old. :-)
