things gold, and things silver

"a wedding anniversary is the celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance and
tenacity. the order varies for any given year."
- paul sweeney

my husband, strolling just ahead of me last week along the oudegracht, stopped short, but before i could ask why, this sweet little still-life-in-yellow distracted me.
he grinned. "i figured you wouldn't want to miss that," he said.
he knows me well.
and so he should: we've been married for 25 years. today.

  2. Let me put on my best Dutch:
    Happj Annjverchary!
Truly, there's something to be said for a partner who points out these yellow commonalities. Far better than orange in your schema, right?
Now, I have to ask a cultural thing: I was under the impression from my Leiden friend Annelies that one occasionally encounters bicycles painted white which are for the general public to use as they see fit. (We saw them at the gates in the park surrounding the Kroller Muller Museum, for instance.) Have I formed an incorrect impression?
I ask because, I know white isn't very colorful, but SFAIK you've never shot a white bike.

  3. Proficiat Lynn! And Frank's right, nothing like a partner who points out possible photo opportunities, I know this from happy experience.

  4. For Frank: many years ago (in the seventies) there was a plan to put white bicycles everywhere in Amsterdam for anyone to use. It never came to fruition, but in the Kroller-Muller park.
And Lynn: I wish you another happy and healthy 25 years!
Somehow it seems that the bicycle here is not supported by anything. Is not a marriage propped to itself as well; sometimes steady, every once a while almost teetering....

  7. Many, many happy returns. My parents got married the day after you (i.e. today!) and we had a wonderful party with family and friends on Sunday. My uncle said some lovely words - "celebrations are important, because they change our remembrances of things, and the circumstances around those things..." I thought that was sweet. Gefeliciteerd!

  8. ~congrats to you and your husband, 25 years, my goodness, that is worthy of praise...in a day and age when it seems that couples treat marriage as a temporary thing, I admire you two being together for 25 years...I would only suppose that you both know each other so well, as you note in your commentary...here's to you both, I raise my glass tonight in honor~

  12. Congratulation Lynn, 25 years is a lifetime together. I am happy for you and your husband, it is wonderful to have somebody with which to share one's life, thoughts, moments. It is only a little over 6 years that I am married with my wife (but we have been living together for more than 9 years), and moments like the one you describe happen all the time. It is a bit scary sometimes to realize that we know each other so well to read into each other minds, but it is also comforting, and gives a fuzzy warm feeling that stays there all day. Happy anniversary!

A bike again. You like bikes, don't you? But then you live in the right country.
    Nice one, this.

  16. Congrats, Lynn (23 for me this summer). But this photo really shows why you must take pictures. This narrow slice, that belongs only to you, must be shared with us. And the fact that your husband saw it before you tells the whole story. Here's to 25 more!
